hjo cover art | Live it Up Sinner, 2025

I have had the pleasure of playing music with the mighty Hoppin’ John Orchestra for almost 30 years. It’s always challenging as new music is being written or transcribed with each performance or recording. It’s also a huge thrill musically as the material and the musicians are some of the best in town and always a gas.

In addition to sharing the bandstand, I also serve as the resident graphic designer. I have designed and built the Hoppin’ John website: https://www.hoppinjohnorchestra.com/, and most recently, we completed a 10 song recording where I was tasked with the design and prep of the package art for our third recording. I’m told there are more to come.

These are pro-bono, so I always try to fit them in between client work. For this one we took the time to create a plan that played into the title: “Live it up Sinner”. Since the sound is very NOLA heavy, we spent quite a bit of time looking into Voodoo references as well as bawdy party themes. We settled on the figure in a bright orange suit wearing a carnival mask. We like the spooky nature of the image inviting us in for a myriad of mysterious musical pleasures and taboos.

Fact is, the music is punchy infectious and big fun. Hopefully, the cover serves as a way to bring you in.
