HJO art / pencil_sketch

This post is here to monitor the sketches and progress of the artwork and design for the new Hoppin’ John CD pack. Since I will be working closely with Mike Hood, the band leader, I wanted to create a place online to look at the sketches. Mike handed me several samples of Robert Crumb and other similar styles that he liked. I’m not about to work in the style of Crumb, but I can use that as a direction for my own drawing style. Since I don’t draw as much as I once did, I like to sketch things very loosely and essentially design the image digitally. Believe it or not, this allows me to better compose, or assemble, the image. I always used to yell at students for not drawing, yet here I am, leaning heavily on the vector tools to help me shape the image.

At the moment, we’re still shaping the art. This allows me to decide if I want a hand drawn illustration, or something composed digitally. Just trying simple ideas at the moment.
